Okay so like video games usually have a bunch of lower level monsters that fuck around with you for a while and that's the zombies we've seen so far, right?

Okay, but then, every level has a boss and that guy is a scary bitch to beat and usually kills you a lot unless you're good. Except Pyramid Head who kills you a lot even if you're good.
